The best sound reproduction starts with the musician. Next comes the equipment (both the instruments/amps, and the recording gear). I have heard plenty of musicians who can make a "cheap" instrument sound amazing! Good quality mics are important, but even more important is how they're used (especially placement and room acoustics).
